Maths lessons are divided into two parts at St Helen’s Primary School
The first part is a 20 minute session known as ‘Big Maths’ where the children learn the core counting, calculating and rapid recall skills which underpin all mathematics.
Teaching for Mastery
The second 40 minutes of the lesson is based on what we’ve called ‘teaching for mastery’. All children have the opportunity to solve problems, explore maths through investigation and develop their ability to reason about maths.
